Bearded Dragon
Basking Lamp Definition
A Bearded dragon basking
lamp is a light source that emits a lot of heat. This excessive
heat is then used to increase basking area of the Bearded
dragon.
Bearded Dragon
Basking Lamp Function
The only function of a
Bearded dragon basking lamp is to increase the basking
temperature. It should not be used as the
ultraviolet light.
There is a difference.
Bearded Dragon
Basking Lamp Requirements
There are various
commercially available Bearded dragon basking lamps available,
marketed for that purpose. These are usually infra red basking
lamps and are very expensive. Fortunately most spot light bulbs
can also be used for this purpose, it does not have to be a
"Bearded dragon basking lamp" per se. The only
Bearded dragon basking lamp requirement is that it should be
able to increase the basking spot to 40 ºC / 104 ºF on the one
side of the vivarium with a temperature gradient of 24 -
34 ºC / 75 - 93 ºF towards the other.
Bearded Dragon
Basking Lamp Fitting
Bearded dragon
basking lamps can either use a bayonet type fitting or a
screw-in fitting. Make sure to buy the appropriate fitting to
prevent dissapointment.
Bearded Dragon
Basking Lamp Warning
Make sure the
basking lamp is not too
warm to prevent overheating (seen as part of the
Bearded dragon
open mouth behavior) and Bearded dragon thermal burns.
Because we are
working with a closed system, overheating can happen very
quickly and can have lethal consequences!. Always test the
basking spot temperature with a reliable
Bearded
dragon thermometer before the final mounting of the basking
lamp fitting and monitor the temperatures constantly thereafter.
A Bearded
dragon thermostat should preferable be used to control the
basking temperatures more efficiently.
Always prevent
direct contact with the Bearded dragon basking lamp by mounting
it far away from the basking rock.
Remember to check
all electrical equipment and its wiring including Bearded dragon
basking lamps at least every six months.
