Bearded Dragon Biology

Bearded Dragon Description

Bearded dragons are robust, heavy-bodied lizards. Except for the fact that they are reptiles and have scales they actually do not resemble traditional dragons at all. The natural ground colour varies from tan to grey to brick red. This enables them to blend in well with the natural soil on which they are found. Their heads are well distinguished from their bodies. A row of soft small conical spines line the back of the head and the sides of the body. Both males and females have so called beards. Male beards are bigger and darker than the female counterparts and are used for courtship and territorial display. Beards get darker during the breeding season.

Bearded Dragon Natural Habitat

Inland Beardies are mostly found in arid eucalyptis and acacia velds, brushlands, sandy and rocky plains and short grass velds. They spend much of their waking hours in bushes and trees or are found basking on rocks. When it is extremely hot they will burrow underground.

Bearded Dragon Natural Food

Bearded dragons are omnivorous and eat a variety of small lizards, mammals, insects and plants. In the wild they feed on vegetation such as dandelions, other flowers and various seeds. Their main source of insects is wild beetles.
