Bearded Dragon Mealworms
Bearded dragon mealworms are the larval stage of the Darkling
beetle (Tenebrio molitor). These larvae and beetles
should rather be fed as an occasional snack instead of the main
insect source.
Feeding Leopard Gecko
Mealworms
Mealworm larvae
contains high amounts of fat (ca. 12 - 13%) and relatively low
amounts protein
(ca. 20.3%). This makes them a poor choice as a staple Bearded dragon
food as high amounts will lead to obesity and poor growth
rates especially in growing dragons. It must also be noted that
Bearded dragon mealworms are apparently very tasty, leading to a
degree of addiction and refusal to eat anything else!
If the occasional mealworm is fed, they
should be fresh. Mealworms can be fed in a
shallow, escape proof dish with calcium supplementation to
stimulate its intake. Uneaten Bearded dragon mealworms should be
removed immediately after feeding is over. Other higher
protein feeder insects such as
crickets and/or
cockroaches
should make out the bulk of the Bearded dragon food.
Additional mealworm larvae can be offered to
breeding female
Bearded dragons on a daily basis to improve the body condition between
egg batches.
