Bearded Dragon Tail Injuries
Bearded dragon tail injuries are probably one of the first Bearded
dragon injuries most owners will come across. Bearded
dragon tail problems are mostly due to Bearded
dragon biting, but can also be due to what is called tail
tip necrosis.
Bearded Dragon Tail Tip Injuries
Bearded dragon tail tip injuries due to tail biting are usually due
to greedy juvenile dragons. Most Bearded
dragon bite injuries occur when too many
Bearded dragons are housed in the same container, or when they
are not adequately fed. Bullying is also seen between difference
sized Bearded dragons, where tail tip and other Bearded dragons
injuries are common. Bearded dragon tail tip injuries are rarely
serious, except when it it bleeding excessively. When this type of Bearded dragon tail
injuries are seen, one must rather buy from somewhere else. If
this happens with your own Bearded dragons, the problem must be
rectified immediately!
Bearded Dragon Tail Tip Necrosis
Bearded dragon tail tip necrosis is a condition where the blood
flow is restricted to the most distal parts of the tail. It is
usually seen in adult Bearded dragons. Tail tip necrosis can be
due to no reason at all, i.e. the distance of the tail tip is
just too long for blood to be adequately pumped by the heart, or
it can be due to constriction of any part of the tail due to an
old physical injury.
Bearded Dragon Tail Injury Response
Apart from being aesthetically unpleasing,
Bearded dragon tail injuries are actually not serious at all.
What is serious is the cause of the tail injury in the first
place. Most injuries are caused by Bearded dragons biting each
other, mostly due overcrowding and too little food.
In the rare instance where a Bearded dragon
tail injury keeps on bleeding, physical haemostasis must be
applied by holding the site closed with a clean piece of toilet
paper or cotton wool for five to ten minutes. It will rarely
start to bleed again. The possibility of infection can be
prevented by starting the Bearded dragon on a source of
antibiotics available after full inspection by your Bearded
dragon vet. |
